Unless you’re one of the 4.6 million Americans who can do business completely online, you’ll need to make sure your Instagram followers can find your premises as easily as possible.

Luckily, adding a location to your Instagram bio is very straightforward to do. And when users click on it, they’ll be redirected to their Maps app, so they can navigate to your doorstep without getting lost on the way.

Follow our step-by-step guide and you’ll have it sorted in no time.

Step 1: Make sure you have a business account

You can only add a location to your Instagram bio if you have a business account. So the first thing you need to do is double-check this is the case.

Using the Instagram app on your phone, press the three lines at the top right of your profile, choose settings, then Account.

If you already have a business account, the last option on the menu will say ‘Switch back to a personal account.’

If you don’t have a business account, it’ll say ‘Switch to a professional account’.

Step 2: If you don’t have a business account, switch to one

Switching to a business account is easy and costs nothing.

Click ‘Switch to a professional account’ and choose ‘business’. Select your category and you’re done.

Alongside being able to add your location to your bio, you’ll also get access to a bunch of useful tools to optimize your Instagram presence and expand your reach, including:

  • Native ads and promotions
  • Call to action buttons and quick replies
  • Instagram shopping — this allows you to create a custom storefront so users can buy your products straight from your Instagram profile
  • Age verification — handy if you sell sensitive goods like liquor

You can switch back to a personal account whenever you like. But bear in mind you’ll lose access to business features, including the ability to display your location on your profile, if you switch.

Step 3: Edit your profile

Once you’ve made sure your Instagram account is a business account (or you’ve switched to one), you can add your location to your bio.

On your profile, press the edit profile button and scroll down to the public business information section.

Then click on the field named ‘contact options’.

Step 4: Key in your business address

In contact options, select business address.

This will take you to a form where you can key in your street address, city or town, and zip code.

Double-check the details to make sure they’re correct, especially if you’re doing this on your phone. You never know when your fingers might betray you and land on the wrong keys.

Step 5: Save your location

All looking good?

Once you’ve checked for any typos and made sure everything is correct, click Done. You’ll find this on the top right of your screen.

This will take you back to the public business information page. Press ‘Save’ — again, this is at the top right of your screen — and you’re all set.

Your location will be published on your profile, and everyone will be able to see it, even users who don’t follow you.

Adding a location to your Instagram bio, in a nutshell

As awesome as your products or services are, it’s highly unlikely that your Instagram followers will spend hours googling or looking you up in the phone book (remember those) to find out where you’re based. So adding a location to an Instagram bio is a no-brainer.

Just make sure your account is actually a business account before you start, as you won’t be able to add your location otherwise. Then follow our instructions, double-check you haven’t mistyped anything, and that’s it.

You’ll be done in less than five minutes.
